In a defining moment for Tanzania’s emerging sports tourism agenda, Commonwealth Ambassador for Tourism and Investment, Jasmine Kikwete, has successfully mobilised a powerful coalition of sponsors to back defending Daegu Marathon champion Gabriel Gerald Geay ahead of the prestigious marathon scheduled for February 22, 2026, in South Korea.

In a strategic move blending patriotism, diplomacy, and economic foresight, Ambassador Kikwete brought together Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), Tanzania’s largest bank NMB Bank, and private sector player Breakpoint Company to sponsor the 2025 gold medalist as he prepares for defending his global title.

Though often described as low-profile, the influence of Ambassador Kikwete, who doubles as Blue Visit Zanzibar and Tanzania CEO, is proving transformational.

The young leader—deeply rooted in Tanzania’s tourism and investment advocacy—has positioned athletics as a strategic gateway to unlock the country’s multi-billion-dollar industry.

“I’m trying my best in my capacity to complement presidents Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan and Dr Hussein Mwinyi’s efforts to stimulate the multi-billion-dollar tourism industry through athletics,” Ambassador Kikwete said while flagging off Geay in northern Tanzania. “Sports provide a powerful global platform to showcase Tanzania’s tourism attractions.”

Her remarks reflect alignment with the broader economic vision of President Samia, whose administration has prioritised tourism as a pillar of national growth.

Sports Tourism: Tanzania’s untapped goldmine

Ambassador Kikwete emphasized that the time has come—particularly for Tanzania Mainland—to roll out structured sports tourism products capable of unlocking leisure travel potential.

Her timing is strategic. Global data indicates that the sports tourism market was valued at approximately $803.9 billion in 2025 and is projected to surge to $2.77 trillion by 2033, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.8 per cent.

The boom is driven by travellers seeking immersive, experience-based journeys—whether attending mega-events like the FIFA World Cup or participating in marathons and endurance races worldwide.

Unlike traditional sightseeing, sports tourism fuses entertainment, emotional connection, and participation—an irresistible combination for modern travellers.

“This is one of the biggest opportunities for Tanzania to bet on and tap into dollars,” she underlined.

“We just need to organise ourselves to support our heroes and heroines in global marathons to promote our country’s inner and outer beauty.”

NMB Bank Northern Zone Manager Baraka Ladslaus (Second Left) says tourism presents vast business opportunities for the financial sector, making the partnership both strategic and visionary.

Corporate Tanzania rallies behind a champion

The flag-off ceremony, held at the upscale Ritzy Arcade Lounge in Arusha, drew athletics officials, tourism stakeholders, and members of the media—signaling a unified national front behind Geay.

TANAPA Assistant Conservation Commissioner and Head of Business Development Jully Bede Lyimo, revealed that the agency has strategically invested in sports—including athletics, golf at Serengeti National Park, and football and basketball initiatives at Mikumi National Park—to strengthen sports tourism and stimulate both domestic and international travel.

During the ceremony, Geay received branded sports gear promoting Tanzania’s parks via TANAPA’s ‘TANAPA-Go’ digital platform, along with training apparel emblazoned with ‘Visit Serengeti National Park’.

Notably, Serengeti was recently crowned Africa’s Leading National Park 2025 at the World Travel Awards—adding global prestige to Tanzania’s promotional efforts.

“TANAPA is substantially investing in supporting various sports, particularly athletics, owing to its potential to promote tourism globally,” Ms Lyimo stated.

“This supports the government’s target of attracting eight million visitors annually by 2030.”

This is one of the biggest opportunities for Tanzania to bet on and tap into dollars,” Commonwealth Ambassador Jasmine Kikwete.

Meanwhile, NMB Bank reinforced its commitment by presenting Geay with a Sh10 million (about $3,850) sponsorship cheque and the newly launched NMB Tap bracelet—a wearable payment solution developed in partnership with Mastercard.

The innovation allows secure, contactless payments worldwide without the need for a traditional card.

NMB Northern Zone Manager Baraka Ladslaus noted that tourism presented vast business opportunities for the financial sector, making the partnership both strategic and visionary.

A beacon of hope for Tanzanian youth

For Geay, Ambassador Kikwete’s intervention marks more than financial support—it represents belief and possibility.

“I can’t thank you enough Ambassador Jasmine Kikwete for being a blessing to athletics in Tanzania,” an emotional Geay said.

“Through your efforts, I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel for young athletes striving to make a difference.”

Tanzania National Parks is investing in various sports, including athletics and golf, owing to their potential for promoting tourism globally.

He pledged to defend his title in Daegu for the pride of the nation and urged for sustained support to nurture Tanzania’s rising sports talent.

In a powerful endorsement of her leadership, Tanzania Athletics Association President Rogath John Steven Akhwari officially named Ambassador Jasmine Kikwete as Matron of the association.

“We have the Commonwealth Marathon this year. As a country, we must prepare to compete effectively. Through you, Ms Jasmine, we believe we can succeed,” he declared.

A new face of economic diplomacy

Ambassador Jasmine Kikwete is fast emerging as a dynamic bridge between tourism, investment, and sport—demonstrating how strategic partnerships can elevate national branding on the global stage.

As Gabriel Geay heads to South Korea to defend his crown, he carries more than athletic ambition. He carries the aspirations of a nation—and the vision of a young Commonwealth ambassador determined to ensure that every stride taken on the international track echoes with the promise of TanzaniaΩ
