In a strategic move to harmonise the uneasy relationship between traditional pastoralism and modern conservation, the government in Meatu District, Tanzania, has launched a major initiative to keep livestock out of protected wildlife areas.

By distributing 1,900 kilograms of pasture seeds to 21 villages, authorities are offering a green olive branch to herders who have long encroached on world-renowned conservation lands in search for fodder.

Sandwiched by Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, and Makao Wildlife Management Area, Meatu is among strategic districts in the country for the promotion of conservation and travel and tourism.

For years, the dry season has forced local livestock keepers to encroach on the game protected areas.

These intrusions have often sparked tension in a district that serves as a vital gateway for Tanzania’s tourism industry.

However, a new chapter is being written, following authorities realising that a solution is in the soil.

Approximately 340 pastoralists have already begun sowing the government-issued pasture seeds.

According to Meatu District Commissioner Fauzia Ngatumbura, the impact could be transformative.

“We’ve spoken with the herders and agreed they will not enter protected areas,” said Ngatumbura during her recent development inspection tour of the district.

“Since their main concern is pasture, the government has provided them with grass seeds. If planted correctly, these can cover 190 acres, significantly reducing the grazing challenge in this district.

Protecting the safari goldmine

The stakes for Meatu are high. The district is home to significant investments, including Mwiba Lodge – a luxurious accommodation facility, and extensive photographic safaris.

These entities do more than just host tourists; they act as a lifeline for the local community.

Councillor Zuhura Chilumba highlighted that villages like Makao, Mwanjoro, Sakasaka, and Mbushi were direct beneficiaries of this tourism-conservation ecosystem.

At Makao, for instance, tourism investors provide free school meals and fund critical health and education infrastructure.

The priority now is to protect these conserved areas, said Special Seats Councillor Zainabu Abdallah, adding: “Our herders must not invade them so that we can continue benefitting from conservation fruits – tourism receipts.”

A broader economic vision

The initiative is being hailed by local leaders as a successful implementation of the ruling CCM Election Manifesto.

Zamda Mohamed, the CCM Youth Wing Secretary for Meatu, credited the administration of President Samia Suluhu Hassan for creating an environment where investors in travel and tourism industry can thrive.

“The revenue from the travel and tourism industry is proof that the administration is implementing the manifesto well,” noted Mohamed, pointing out that improved infrastructure has also benefited the district’s cotton farmers.

As the new pasture begins to sprout, the district remains open for business, with Ngatumbura inviting more investors to explore Meatu’s untapped conservation areas.

For now, the focus remains on the ground, ensuring that 190 acres of new grass will be enough to keep the peace between the cattle and the clouds of dust kicked up by safari vansΩ
