With the backing of Friedkin Conservation Fund (FCF), Mwiba Holdings is going beyond its call of duty – tourism – to invest in lives of people surrounding Maswa Game Reserve on the western fringes of Tanzania’s tourism flagship – Serengeti National Park.
Mwiba Holdings’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative has just identified 195 children with various underlying health conditions from 16 adjacent villages to restore hope and smiles to them and their kinfolks.
These include minors with legs curved outward at the knees (bow legs); both feet pointing downward, turning inward, and the sole facing backwards (clubfoot); and open or split lips or roofs of the mouths (cleft lip and palate).
Of the identified minors, 51 are in need of physiotherapy, 27 ought to be monitored for at least a year beforehand, and 53 already have been scheduled for surgery at KAFIKA House in Arusha, Tanzania, this month.
This time last year, Mwiba had also identified 64 minors in need of medical care. At present, surgeons have successfully carried out operations on 28 of the children who are in good health and have reunited with their families.

“The remainders still receiving treatment are expected to return home soon, fully recovered,” Mwiba Holdings’ Public Relations Officer Mulisu Richard Ngassa told media practitioners recently.
FCF Projects Manager Aurelia Mtui said Mwiba Holdings was liaising with other health facilities to provide services KAFIKA House did not offer, including treatment for tumors, children with enlarged heads (hydrocephalus), and a spinal cord health condition known as spina bifida.
“This initiative aims at widening the scope of support and ensuring more children receive the necessary care. We will continue working with village government councils and district authorities to support children’s health,” Mtui explained.
Mwiba Holdings’ commitment to invest in forging positive change to lives of its neighbouring community transcends the surgeries to offer education sponsorship, build health facilities, and counting.
Leaders Thrilled
Immediate Meatu District Council Chairperson Philipo Anthony and Community Development Officer Bonji Bugeni praised Mwiba Holdings for providing essential medical support, saying it was a lifeline for families that could not afford costs for medical treatment.
We sincerely thank Mwiba for covering costs. They did it last year, and they are doing it agains this year,” Timotheo Ngassa, resident of Sapa Village in Meatu District, Simiyu Region, Tanzania.
Anthony, a resident of Makao Village, said the medical support was a testament of benefits accrued from the community’s participation in wildlife and environmental conservation.
Bugeni, who has been part of the team tasked to identify the minors in need of treatment, admitted that Mwiba Holdings’ contribution to the community went beyond surgeries.
“Mwiba has restored joy and hope to several families in Meatu. Besides medical support, they offer education sponsorship, build health facilities, and fund initiatives aimed at controlling dangerous stray wildlife,” he said.
Heartfelt Gratitude from Families
Reporting miracles they witnessed, including their children with leg disabilities walking and playing, some deeply touched family members said the medical support had transformed their lives, thanking the bigheartedness of Mwiba Holdings.
Sharing their heartfelt thanks for the life changing surgeries, Timotheo Ngassa and Michael Marcus Mahona said the treatment had allowed their children to walk, play, and enjoy like never before.

“We sincerely thank Mwiba for covering the costs. They did it last year, and they are doing it again this year,” remarked Ngasa, as he celebrated the journey and vision of Mwiba and Friedkin to uplift the community.
The resident of Sapa Village said his son Emmanuel had been hospitalised for over three months with no surgery conducted on him, owing to exorbitant costs. With Mwiba’s help, the surgery was done free of charge.
Emmanuel, who underwent surgery last year and has recovered, also expressed gratitude to Mwiba for giving him the opportunity for living like other children without disabilities.
Mahona from Buganza Village said, in turn, that his six-year-old son was unable to play with peers, as leg disability had robbed the pupil of confidence at school.
“After the treatment he received at KAFIKA House, his life has changed significantly—he now plays and attends school joyfully,” he observed.
