Zara Tanzania Adventures supported a diverse team of climbers with disabilities, led by Dutch native Wendy Bardman, in their successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This expedition underscores the belief that physical challenges do not define one’s potential for extraordinary achievements.

Wendy Bardman, who lost her right leg in 1999 at the age of 35, has transformed her personal journey into a mission to advocate for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in adventure sports.

Her fourth summit of Kilimanjaro was particularly significant, as she was joined by climbers facing various challenges, including blindness, deafness, and limb differences. Together, they reached Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, exemplifying determination and teamwork.

“We aim at demonstrating that with the right support and opportunities, individuals with disabilities can accomplish incredible feats,” said Bardman, adding: “This climb is a testament to our collective strength and the unyielding human spirit.”

Zara Tanzania Adventures, renowned for its commitment to responsible and inclusive tourism, provided specialised support for the expedition.

This included expert guides trained in adaptive climbing techniques, customised equipment, and comprehensive logistical assistance, ensuring each climber’s unique needs were met.

“Our goal is to make the wonders of Mount Kilimanjaro accessible to everyone,” stated Zainab Ansell, founder and CEO of Zara Tanzania Adventures. “Witnessing this group’s success reinforces our dedication to inclusivity in adventure tourism,” she adds.

Beyond the physical accomplishment, the team utilised this journey to raise awareness and funds for the Foundation Friends of the Port Reitz School in the Netherlands.

This organisation supports children with disabilities, providing essential education and medical care. Through their ascent, the climbers hope to inspire others to contribute to this noble cause.

This expedition not only highlights the climbers’ physical achievements but also serves as a powerful message that with determination and support, perceived limitations can be transcended.
