NEW YORK – Just like the 1789 French Revolution, the current political events in France are causing a ripple effect in Western Europe and the continent of North America. It would be prudent for one to say that pragmatism is being replaced with panic and apprehension.

Napoleon Bonaparte once said: “victory belongs to the most preserving.” After enduring so many losses in the past, Marine Le Pen’s far right political party, the National Rally (RN) has finally secured a projected win of approximately 34 per cent of the national vote that could lead to power.
For a long time, the liberals have exercised over confidence in their “theme” of globalization/global village. However, the unplanned influx of immigrants to western countries; economic crisis in some western countries; and cultural insecurity has created a sense of despair, suspicion and political lacuna amongst certain groups living in these stable democracies. With France being an example of a bigger picture, these pattern of events have paved way for the alternative: The far right – NR party of Mrs Le Pen and her protege, Mr Bardella.
“I am to be prime minister for all the French people, if the French give us their votes,” said Mr Bardella. Meanwhile, his mentor, Mrs Le Pen has promised to carry on with her political career and vowing that she would never abandon the French people.

Of course, it is not yet over until it is over. If the Centrist party of the incumbent, Emmanuel Macron that is projected to secure only 20 per cent of the national vote in the first round, manages to unite with the New Popular Front party (projected to secure 28 per cent in the first round; making it second to NR), and other political stakeholders to be involved in a potential second round election scheduled for July 7, then the possibility of hampering any would be prospects of Mrs Le Pen and Mr Bardella’s NR party from gaining the ultimate power and control of the French government could yield. Regardless, the apparent trend of events is highlighting the French political intricacies in a capricious way.

The stakes are so high due to the importance of NATO alliance; the EU; the Russian war in Ukraine; and the unpredictable outcome of the upcoming presidential election in the United States this November.
But one should not forget, although the French Revolution of 1789 was part of the major foundation of modern history, it played a pivotal role in shaping the current European and global politics. Additionally, due to historically unresolved grudges amongst the major powers, it partly induced the causes of the 1st and the 2nd World War.
Meanwhile, the little bird hopes that the current political events in France will not cause shockwaves that may create a new world order. After all, no sober mind would wish to start a conversation of an armageddon or engage in a simulation of a 3rd World War because French local politics is setting the tone. Enough is enough!

As the French people engage in their 2024 elections, the world is keenly observing. So, the ball is in the hands of the French people and their politicians as they prepare for a second-round vote on July 7. Whether at a micro or macro level, the French people can either save the world order or endanger the future of global democracyΩ
