A 37-year-old Tanzanian hot balloon pioneer has just turned one of Africa’s most iconic safari experiences into a global business milestone.

Serengeti Balloon Safaris has become the world’s first hot-air balloon company to achieve Certified B Corporation status, placing the long-established operator at the centre of a global conversation about how businesses can create value for people, communities, customers, and the planet.

The certification is more than a sustainability badge.

It follows an independent assessment of the company’s governance, workforce, community, environmental and customer practices, giving formal recognition to a philosophy Serengeti Balloon Safaris says has guided the business since its founding: That long-term commercial success depends on the wellbeing of the people and landscapes that sustain it.

For Tanzania’s premium tourism industry, the milestone carries significance.

As travellers increasingly seek experiences that are exclusive, authentic, and responsible, Serengeti Balloon Safaris is positioning itself not simply as a balloon operator, but as an example of how African tourism businesses can turn stewardship into a long-term competitive advantage.

Founded 37 years ago, the company has built its reputation above the plains of the Serengeti, transforming a sunrise balloon flight into one of Tanzania’s most distinctive luxury safari experiences.

Today, Serengeti Balloon Safaris operates across three of Tanzania’s premier national parks: Serengeti, Ruaha and Tarangire, giving travellers an aerial perspective of three very different wilderness landscapes.

But the latest milestone is not about flying higher. It is about demonstrating that the business behind the flight can meet a higher standard.

John Corse, Managing Director of Serengeti Balloon Safaris, said the certification reflects values that had guided the company throughout its history.

“We are thrilled and honoured to have achieved this recognition for the way we run our company.

“At SBS we are passionate about promoting a positive impact for each and every stakeholder we have — our team, our guests, our community, and the environment we live and work in,” Corse said.

He added that decisions ranging from procurement to staff training were guided by those principles, making the B Corp recognition a formal affirmation of the company’s longstanding approach to business.

B Corporation certification is awarded to companies that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

The movement places equal emphasis on the interests of workers, communities, customers, and the environment alongside conventional business considerations.

For Serengeti Balloon Safaris, that philosophy is closely connected to the nature of its business.

Serengeti Balloon Safaris’ revolution is closely linked to its determination to continually improve the guest experience while preserving the standards that have defined the brand.

A balloon safari cannot exist without healthy landscapes, abundant wildlife, skilled people, supportive communities, and a destination capable of delivering an exceptional experience year after year.

The company’s three national park operations reflect the diversity of Tanzania’s wilderness.

The Serengeti remains its historic home, where balloon flights provide sweeping views of the vast plains and wildlife below.

In Ruaha, the experience takes on a more rugged character, with dramatic landscapes, ancient baobabs, and the Great Ruaha River forming part of the aerial spectacle.

Tarangire offers yet another dimension, defined by its distinctive baobab-studded landscape and large elephant populations.

The expansion into these destinations has broadened the company’s portfolio while allowing it to showcase different expressions of Tanzania’s natural heritage from the air.

For Pascal Kirigiti, Commercial Manager at Serengeti Balloon Safaris, the company’s evolution is closely linked to its determination to continually improve the guest experience while preserving the standards that have defined the brand.

The expansion into Serengeti, Ruaha, and Tarangire reflects a commitment to innovation and to showcasing different dimensions of Tanzania’s wilderness without compromising safety, professionalism, and personalised service.

The Serengeti remains Serengeti Balloon Safaris’ historic home, where balloon flights provide sweeping views of the vast plains and wildlife below.

The experience begins long before the balloon leaves the ground and extends well beyond the flight itself — from highly trained pilots and carefully selected launch sites to wildlife interpretation and the distinctive bush breakfast that concludes each journey.

That attention to detail has helped to establish Serengeti Balloon Safaris as one of Tanzania’s most respected ballooning operators, with the company often described as the “Balloonist’s Ballooning Company” because of its pioneering approach to routes, standards, and operational development.

Safety remains central to the business. The company maintains a rigorous operational approach and the highest level of insurance available to balloon operators in Tanzania.

Its contribution to the development of the country’s aviation and tourism skills base is equally notable.

Serengeti Balloon Safaris was the first company to train and employ Tanzanian pilots on a full-time basis, while its chief pilot recently became Tanzania’s first Balloon Flight Test Examiner.

The achievement comes at a time when luxury tourism is undergoing a broader transformation.

Affluent travellers are increasingly looking beyond exclusivity and asking how experiences are delivered, who benefits from them, and what impact they leave behind.

That shift gives the B Corp certification a commercial dimension.

Founded 37 years ago, Serengeti Balloon Safaris has built its reputation above the plains of the Serengeti, transforming a sunrise balloon flight into one of Tanzania’s most distinctive luxury safari experiences.

For Serengeti Balloon Safaris, responsible business is not separate from the luxury experience. It is part of the product itself.

The company’s proposition is built around access to extraordinary landscapes, silence, wildlife, and personalised service, rather than unnecessary spectacle.

Its signature champagne bush breakfast, served in a remote wilderness location revealed only after the flight begins, reinforces that philosophy.

The luxury lies not in excess, but in access.

Access to landscapes that remain wild. Access to wildlife from a perspective few travellers experience.

And access to a carefully crafted service in which the wilderness remains the star.

The B Corp milestone, therefore, represents more than another accolade for a company with nearly four decades of experience.

It signals a new chapter in the evolution of Serengeti Balloon Safaris — one in which the standards applied to the experience in the sky are matched by the standards applied to the business on the ground.

The luxury lies not in excess, but in access to landscapes that remain wild and to wildlife from a perspective few travellers experience.

For Tanzania, it also offers a powerful example of how tourism enterprises can build global relevance around the protection of the very landscapes that make their businesses possible.

The balloon will continue to rise above Tanzania’s wilderness at sunrise.

But with its B Corp certification, the business behind the flight has reached a new altitude.
