Security incident disrupts White House press event, prompting investigation in Washington

WASHINGTON — A major security incident interrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, an annual event that highlights the role of the press in the United States, after an armed suspect breached security near the venue, officials said.

President Donald Trump said the individual approached from a distance carrying multiple weapons before being stopped by members of the U.S. Secret Service, the federal agency responsible for protecting the president. One officer was struck by gunfire at close range but was protected by a bulletproof vest.

“He was shot from a very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job,” Trump said.

Authorities said it remains unclear how the suspect was able to enter the secured area. Video shared publicly appears to show a man moving quickly through a checkpoint as law enforcement officers responded.

NBC reported that the man arrested in the shooting has been tentatively identified as a man in his early 30s from California, two law enforcement officials said.

Officials have publicly said he has no criminal record and was not on the radar of law enforcement in Washington, D.C.

The president was quickly escorted to safety by security personnel. Such responses are part of established procedures designed to remove protected individuals from potential threats while specialized teams address the situation.

FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators are examining evidence recovered at the scene, including a firearm and shell casings, and are conducting interviews with witnesses.

“No piece of information is too small,” Patel said, urging anyone with relevant information to contact authorities.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said criminal charges are expected, though the investigation is still in its early stages.

In remarks following the incident, Trump called for stronger security measures at large public gatherings.

“Today, we need levels of security that probably nobody has ever seen before,” he said.
