At dawn on the open plains of the Maasai Mara, the land still looks familiar, golden grass rippling in the breeze, acacia trees etched against the sky, and the distant silhouettes of grazing wildebeest.

But for conservationists who have watched this landscape for decades, something vital is missing.

The thunder of hooves that once rolled across these plains with the seasons has grown eerily quiet.

Kenya’s famed wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara has shrunk by about 90 percent in just five years as fences and other barriers slice through historic wildlife corridors, new research shows — a collapse that conservationists warn could send shockwaves through the country’s multi-million-dollar tourism industry.

However, the findings show that the Mara–Loita population of white-bearded wildebeest has lost nearly nine-tenths of its historic migratory footprint since 2020, as fencing expanded across privately owned land bordering the reserve.

The annual movement — long a magnet for eco-tourists and the ecological engine of the Mara — is now “collapsing,” researchers say.

For decades, the seasonal movement of wildebeest has been one of Kenya’s most powerful tourism brands, anchoring safari bookings, sustaining lodges and supporting thousands of jobs in guiding, hospitality and transport. Industry players say a prolonged decline could undermine the very attraction that has helped fuel a tourism boom across the Maasai Mara and beyond.

Just north of the world-famous Serengeti migration, the Mara’s smaller but vital journey once saw more than 100,000 animals move between wet- and dry-season ranges.

Tourists timed trips to witness river crossings and vast herds stretching to the horizon — scenes that have defined Kenya’s image on the global travel map.

New maps published in the Atlas of Ungulate Migration show how rapidly that spectacle has faded.

Researchers from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI), working with the Global Initiative on Ungulate Migration (GIUM), used detailed animal tracking data to document how land-use change is truncating long-distance movements across Kenya’s Greater Mara Ecosystem.

“For ungulates — hooved mammals like wildebeest, zebras and antelope — rapid human development in the form of fences and infrastructure is cutting off migration routes around the world,” said Dr. Jared Stabach, terrestrial science lead with the Smithsonian’s Movement of Life Initiative, who has studied the Mara population since 2010.

“In the Mara ecosystem, the pace of change offers a warning to other grassland systems facing similar pressures,” he said.

The research traces the problem back to the early 1980s, when land adjacent to the reserve was opened up for subdivision and private ownership.

Fencing accelerated sharply in the mid-2010s across Narok County as land was secured for agriculture, settlement and private use.

Today, fences block key pathways linking the western Mara to the Loita Plains in the northeast — once a crucial wet-season range.

Recent tracking data show most wildebeest now live largely resident lives, with only a small fraction still attempting the journey east.

GIUM analysts estimate the overall migration footprint has shrunk by nearly 90 percent since 2020, making the Mara one of the few places where scientists have documented the real-time collapse of a large-scale wildlife migration.

“Migration and population abundance often go hand in hand,” Stabach said.

Unable to reach distant water, forage and calving grounds, the Mara wildebeest population has fallen from more than 100,000 animals to fewer than 25,000, according to estimates from Kenya’s Wildlife Research and Training Institute and the Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing.

Tourism experts warn the ecological decline could translate into economic losses.

The Maasai Mara is among Kenya’s top revenue-generating destinations, drawing high-spending visitors and underpinning community conservancies that rely on wildlife-based income.

A diminished migration risks fewer visitors, shorter stays and reduced returns for local communities.

The Mara map is the latest addition to the Atlas of Ungulate Migration, a GIUM project implemented under the auspices of the United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species.

The initiative aims to make migration maps publicly available to guide conservation and infrastructure planning, highlighting where movement corridors must remain open if migrations are to persist.

Across East Africa and beyond, researchers say the pace of landscape change is often faster than efforts to map and protect wildlife routes.

Climate change is compounding the challenge, with increasingly frequent droughts shrinking habitat for species that evolved to roam hundreds of kilometres in search of food and water.

“Once lost, migration is difficult to restore,” Stabach said. “Animals travel routes learned and refined over generations. However, in other parts of Africa, fence removal has led to the recovery of historic ungulate migrations.”

Conservationists argue the crisis does not mean development and wildlife conservation must be mutually exclusive.

Instead, they say, it highlights the need for more precise land-use planning that safeguards both livelihoods and natural heritage.

Dr. Joseph Ogutu, a scientist at the University of Hohenheim in Germany and a collaborator on the project, said detailed maps are central to that balance.

“Human development and wildlife migration in Kenya don’t have to be exclusive,” Ogutu said. “Maps pinpoint where animals most need freedom of movement. The imperative has now shifted from conservation alone to active habitat restoration.”

Researchers continue to monitor the remaining herds, warning that without urgent action to reopen corridors, the loss will extend beyond ecology — threatening a tourism engine that has helped define Kenya’s economy and global identity for generations.
